IARC Salon—The changing culture of fieldwork
Nov 18, 2021 at 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
The culture of safety and inclusion in fieldwork is evolving to consider changing conversations around social justice movements, risk management and technological innovation. The COVID-19 pandemic has further complicated the approach researchers take to field safety. During this salon, the following speakers will talk about the approaches they have taken to make fieldwork safer for researchers, participants and the local communities in which they work:
- Joanna Young Director, Inspiring Girls Expeditions of Alaska and IARC Postdoctoral Fellow
- Bob Bolton Research Associate Professor, International Arctic Research Center
- Syndonia Bret-Harte, Science Co-Director for Toolik Field Station, and a Professor in Biology and Wildlife

This semester’s IARC salon graduate student coordinators are Julian Dann and Sarah Clement. Julian is an interdisciplinary master’s student working on remote sensing of tundra disturbance and science communication. Sarah is a PhD student in natural resources & sustainability studying science education through community and citizen science. She is excited to explore issues around community engagement in science and cultural norms (and how they’re changing) in field work and graduate student experiences.
