New climate and energy training for educators

Educators can participate in a new, one-credit course on climate change and energy.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks International Arctic Research Center is partnering with the Renewable Energy Alaska Project to offer the course by distance delivery from Aug. 3-6.

According to course instructor Christina Buffington, an IARC science education specialist, climate and energy are inseparable topics.

“We all use energy and are living in a warming world,” said Buffington.

Climate and Energy Connections in My Community is open to teachers and youth group leaders interested in exploring energy conservation, efficiency and renewable alternatives in a warming world. Course instructors will equip participants with tools to integrate culturally responsive climate and energy-related activities into youth engagement during the upcoming year.

Participants who register by July 27 will receive a hands-on, inquiry-based kit with citizen science activities for exploring classroom energy use and weather with youth.

Successful applicants who complete all course assignments will receive one 500-level credit in education or natural resource management from UAF.
