Monitoring whales and ships in Arctic marine regions

Jul 21, 2022 at 11:00 am 12:00 pm

IARC is hosting a special seminar with visiting PhD students Greta Ferloni and Marie Zahn on Monitoring whales and ships in Arctic marine regions. Attend in person in Akasofu 401 (masks required) or register below to watch virtually.

Greta Ferloni (DurhamARCTIC, Durham University) has been a visiting PhD researcher at IARC since January, and is interested in how recent changes in sea ice are impacting vessel traffic in the Bering Strait region. Greta will share her progress to date analysing the Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment (PAME) Arctic Ship Traffic Data (ASTD) dataset that provides information on shipping activities in the region using AIS signals.

Marie Zahn (School of Aquatic & Fishery Sciences, University of Washington) is visiting IARC during July and August. Her talk is titled: Monitoring Arctic toothed whales and their coastal marine habitats in West Greenland. Marie will share a broad overview of her PhD research, both completed and ongoing, that focuses on West Greenland ecology in the Atlantic sector of the Arctic. Her research examines features of beluga and narwhal bioacoustics and oceanographic variability in glacier fjords that are seasonally occupied by narwhals.
