Virtual exhibit—Why we won’t just leave: what Alaska is telling the world about climate change

Mar 1, 2021 at 8:00 amApr 10, 2021 at 5:00 pm

The International Arctic Research Center is featured in the virtual art exhibit, Why we won’t just leave: what Alaska is telling the world about climate change, curated by Lindsay Carron and presented by Los Angeles based Social and Public Art Resource Center. The exhibit is available to view for free through April 10, 2021. Graphics from IARC’s publication Alaska’s Changing Environment are skillfully displayed alongside more traditional art like portraits, paintings and photography. IARC’s data visualizations provide evidence of Alaska’s rapid environmental change, complimenting the art pieces which focus on how Alaskans are responding.

IARC featured graphs and illustrations:

#7.1 Annual temperatures for Alaska – Alaska’s Changing Environment graphic by Rick Thoman

#7.2 Alaska glacier ice loss – Alaska’s Changing Environment graphic by Bret Wouters

#10 From ice fields to ocean – Kristin Timm

#22 Alaska wildfires – Alaska’s Changing Environment graphic by Rick Thoman

#36 Shifting subsistence resources and timing – Alaska’s Changing Environment graphic by Krista Heeringa

#46 Alaska climate adaptation plans – Alaska’s Changing Environment graphic by Kelsey Aho
