Seminar: High-latitude climate science at Los Alamos National Laboratory
Aug 9, 2022 at 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm
IARC is hosting a seminar by visiting scientist Wilbert Weijer on high-latitude climate science taking place at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The seminar will highlight current climate projects and opportunities for collaboration between LANL and IARC.
Scientists at LANL have been involved in Earth system modeling since the 1980s. The availability of some of the fastest supercomputers stimulated further development of climate component models like the Parallel Ocean Program (POP) and the Los Alamos Sea Ice Model (CICE). These models were geared towards high-performance computing and pushed the boundaries of high-resolution climate modeling. In recent years, model development has focused on variable-resolution modeling, and LANL contributed several model components to DOE’s flagship Earth system model E3SM. Several other climate projects have found a home at LANL, leading to a rich portfolio of climate research focused mostly on high latitudes.
This event is being held in person in Akasofu 401 and virtually.
