IARC Salon: Arctic geopolitics

Join the International Arctic Research Center for the February IARC Salon. This month’s discussion is with Mike Sfraga and Brandon Boylan on geopolitics in the Arctic.  

Mike Sfraga was appointed chair of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission by President Biden in 2021. Sfraga is also an affiliate professor at the International Arctic Research Center, a graduate from UAF (geography and northern studies) and has held several academic and executive positions within the UA system. His current work examines implications of the changing political climate in the Arctic. He is an Alaskan wilderness explorer and a biographer.

Brandon Boylan is a professor of political science and the director of the UAF Arctic and Northern Studies program. He is also a member of UAF’s Center for Arctic Security and Resilience. The Arctic is one of many focuses of Boylan’s published research. One example, of his Arctic related work involves Arctic maritime traffic implications for international cooperation and security.

This semester’s IARC salon graduate student coordinators are PhD students Michael Lundberg and Addie Norgaard. Michael studies Arctic atmospheric and physical oceanographic processes. Addie is in oceanography studying inorganic carbon dynamics in the Gulf of Alaska.
