CICOES Research Development Grant Opportunity
UAF faculty and NOAA researchers are invited to explore upcoming research needs and build new collaborative proposals through CICOES-UAF.
A research development grant call for proposals is open with a deadline of Nov 9, 2026. This funding supports activities that fall within at least one of the CICOES research themes and is open to faculty, research staff and postdocs with PI status. Collaboration with researchers in other CICOES partner universities (UW, OSU, UAF) is required for partnered projects.
Other opportunities are currently open for postdocs through the CICOES Postdoctoral Scholar Program and undergraduates through the NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship.
About CICOES
The Cooperative Institute for Climate, Ocean, and Ecosystem Studies at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is housed within the International Arctic Research Center. Over the years, IARC and other UAF researchers have collaborated with CICOES partner institutions, the University of Washington and Oregon State University, on a variety of projects to advance National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research and education across ocean, atmosphere, and marine ecosystem sciences.

CICOES provides an organizational hub and framework that supports NOAA’s research goals by bringing global and regional topics of concern and interest to the public and creating opportunities for the next generation of researchers. Collaborative investigations sponsored through CICOES involve a broad array of topics related to climate, ocean, atmosphere, and ecosystem studies.
Over twenty mentoring faculty and postdoctoral fellows at UAF from the International Arctic Research Center, the Geophysical Institute and the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences have received funding through CICOES. Their research has tracked changes in the ocean and marine ecosystems, leveraged resources and efforts to connect with Alaska community members’ experiences, and expanded the reach of Arctic science to all audiences.
Ocean monitoring programs supported by CICOES include long-term tracking of fluctuations and changes in the Arctic Ocean, including ocean acidification, ecosystem health and physical processes that affect global circulation. Multi-agency autonomous sensing also helps researchers understand changing ocean parameters and track conditions for better fisheries management.
CICOES-UAF also supports a broad range of interdisciplinary projects that help to address pressing fisheries assessment and marine species management needs. Projects like modeling climate-informed habitat across salmon life stages, developing a new method for aging perch based on DNA markers, and studying Bering Sea crab-gear interactions are improving understanding of fish ecosystem and population health to inform fisheries management. CICOES also supported the publication of the Alaska Arctic Observatory and Knowledge Hub Newsletter of seasonal observations and environmental conditions from across the AAOKH Observer Network.
