DESCRIPTION:Join us for a series of virtual science presentations by the members of the 2021 Girls on Ice Alaska team!   \n\n\n\nRegister here \n\n\n\nAbout Girls on Ice Alaska \n\n\n\nInspiring Girls Expeditions began in 1999 with the creation of our flagship mountaineering program\, Girls on Ice\, in Washington State. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, with support from the Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center\, a second Girls on Ice expedition was launched in Alaska primarily for Alaskan girls. The program has since grown to include Girls in Icy Fjords and the Alaska EPSCoR-supported Girls on Water\, two sea kayaking expeditions. Each year\, these teams camp in\, explore\, and study the respective landscapes of the Alaska Range’s Gulkana Glacier\, Northwestern Fjord near Seward\, Alaska\, and Southcentral Alaska’s Kachemak Bay. Teams are led by a group of graduate students and early-career scientists\, artists\, and guides\, providing a unique and intensive professional development opportunity. \n\n\n\nEach day brings science lessons\, wilderness excursions\, art activities\, and self-designed science projects. After a week in the backcountry\, the teams spend their last 2 days at learning institutes of the University of Alaska Fairbanks\, where they publicly present their scientific findings. \n\n\n\nDownload event flyer

SUMMARY:Supporting the Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks (SAON) Roadmap for Arctic Observing & Data Systems and US AON: The RNA CoObs Project
DESCRIPTION:Hajo Eicken\, IARC director\, and Craig Chythlook\, IARC Indigenous Liaison\, Food Security Working Group will present at the NOAA Science Seminar Series. \n\n\n\nAbstract: The Research Network Activities for Sustained Coordinated Observations of Arctic Change (RNA CoObs) project seeks to support the Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks (SAON) Roadmap for Arctic Observing & Data Systems (ROADS). Through meetings\, collaborations\, and partnership with the Arctic Observing Summit (AOS) Food Security Working Group (FSWG) and other partners\, the project will step through the elements of ROADS\, including the identification of Shared Arctic Variables tied to societal benefits as defined by the FSWG\, the capture of requirements for observing activities aimed at SAVs\, and the design and adaption of information infrastructure. With a focus on the Pacific Arctic the project is meant to help explore and demonstrate how an internationally coordinated roadmap for Arctic observing can be put into action. A number of NOAA Alaska/Arctic activities are of relevance in this context\, including NOAA’s leadership in regional ocean observing\, the U.S. Arctic Observing Network\, and the Distributed Biological Observatory. The food security observing roadmap will guide observing activities in the Pacific Arctic and inform the ROADS process at the pan-Arctic scale. ROADS will then better serve operators\, the research community\, and decision-makers in their own efforts. \n\n\n\nRemote Access: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/5043028146609925132Webinar ID: 728-771-387 \n\n\n\nTest your system here before the seminar!: https://support.goto.com/webinar/system-check-organizer

SUMMARY:Seminar: High-latitude climate science at Los Alamos National Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:IARC is hosting a seminar by visiting scientist Wilbert Weijer on high-latitude climate science taking place at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The seminar will highlight current climate projects and opportunities for collaboration between LANL and IARC. \n\n\n\nScientists at LANL have been involved in Earth system modeling since the 1980s. The availability of some of the fastest supercomputers stimulated further development of climate component models like the Parallel Ocean Program (POP) and the Los Alamos Sea Ice Model (CICE). These models were geared towards high-performance computing and pushed the boundaries of high-resolution climate modeling. In recent years\, model development has focused on variable-resolution modeling\, and LANL contributed several model components to DOE’s flagship Earth system model E3SM. Several other climate projects have found a home at LANL\, leading to a rich portfolio of climate research focused mostly on high latitudes. \n\n\n\nThis event is being held in person in Akasofu 401 and virtually.
