SUMMARY:Cryomobilities: Ship traffic in the icy waters of the Bering Strait region
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Greta Ferloni\, Durham University\, UK \n\n\n\nIn 2022\, Greta spent six months at IARC\, analyzing ship data from the Arctic Council’s PAME ASTD dataset as part of her PhD. Greta’s work led to the development of an automated standalone open-source Python script to clean and process AIS data from the PAME database.  \n\n\n\nUsing this data\, findings indicate that vessel traffic has been increasing in the Bering Strait region. Importantly\, vessel activity in higher sea-ice concentrations is increasing at a greater rate than vessel activity in areas of open water. Roughly one third of the increased pack-ice traffic is attributable to icebreakers along the Russian coast. \n\n\n\nWatch the presentation  (passcode: a=2?9mZ4)

This seminar series aims to promote international collaboration between the International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (IARC/UAF) and the Arctic Research Center at Hokkaido University (ARC/HU) primarily focused on ocean sciences. Speakers and participants from other research institutions are also welcome. \n\n\n\nDr. Sei-Ichi Saitoh\, Hokkaido University’s Arctic Research Center faculty\, presented on the ongoing work of the Working Group on Integrated Ecosystem Assessment for the Central Arctic Ocean (WGICA)\, which aims to provide a holistic analysis of present and future ecosystem and human activities in the Central Arctic Ocean.  \n\n\n\nDr. Betsy Baker\, IARC Affiliate faculty and Wilson Center Polar Institute Global Fellow addressed the relevance for marine ecosystems and marine scientific activity of the 2018 Central Arctic Ocean Fisheries Agreement and the recently agreed text of the High Seas Treaty on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction. \n\n\n\nView the event recording

SUMMARY:Water Day at IARC
DESCRIPTION:People of all ages are invited to the International Arctic Research Center to learn about water. Undergraduate students in the class Introduction to Watershed Management (NRM 370) will lead fun\, hands-on\, mind-on exploration of models and games that relate to watersheds. The public activities will take place from 1:30 – 2:30 pm in the Akasofu lobby. During an earlier portion of the event\, the NRM 370 students will also teach Watershed Charter School 8th graders to be water wise.\n\nACTIVITY STATIONS \n• Awesome Aquifer Model – explore surface and ground water interactions and properties of porosity and permeability\n• Color me a Watershed – share your favorite waterbody while learning about mapping\n• EnviroScape Model – make a visual and playful connection between land use\, water quality\, and pollution prevention.\n• Just Passing Through – time the flow of water through different soils to discover the importance of infiltration.\n• Blue Planet – the blue marble we live on is made of mostly water. Try your hand at probability: water or land?\n• Drop in the Bucket – how much clean\, fresh water is available? Listen carefully and you might hear a precious drop of water.\n• Water Pollution Filtration – make some polluted water with household supplies\, then design and test a filter to clean it.\n• Incredible Journey – become a water molecule and flip some dice to decide your fate in the never-ending water cycle.

SUMMARY:Arctic Science Summit Week 2016
DESCRIPTION:Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) is an annual gathering of international organizations involved in Arctic research. It is designed to strengthen collaborations across academia\, government agencies\, local communities\, industry\, non-governmental organizations and other Arctic stakeholders.\n\nThe 2016 Summit was held in Fairbanks\, Alaska\, USA and included ASSW Business Meetings\, the Arctic Council Senior Arctic Officials Meeting\, the 2016 Arctic Observing Summit\, and the first fully-developed Model Arctic Council.\n\nThe International Arctic Assembly on 15 March was a day of dialogue on issues facing Alaska and the Arctic. The day concluded with a sold-out Banquet featuring Alaska cuisine\, dance performances by regional indigenous groups\, and live music by local artists.
