Are there any model countries?\n\n\n\nHow to involve non-Arctic countries. What are their motivations for engagement?\n\n\n\nWhat are the obstacles? And what could or should be done to remove or resolve these?\n\n\n\n\nParticipants: Representatives from global and regional organizations\, including Arctic Council Working Groups\, European Commission\, GEO\, Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System (SIOS) and WMO. Representatives from MOSAIC and T-MOSAIC. \n\n\n\n\nWorking Group 5 session agenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Arctic Observing Summit series\n\n\n\nBefore the Summit\n\n\n\nAOS organizers develop the Summit theme and sub-themes. The theme for AOS 2020 was “Observing for Action.” Working groups are built around sub-themes to start organizing community input and planning for the Summit. A call for white papers and short statements is the first opportunity for the broader observational community to provide input into the organization in a year’s AOS. In addition to white papers and short statements\, the Roadmap for Arctic Observing and Data Systems (ROADS) provides an important framework for work at the summit. Learn about ROADS background. \n\n\n\nDuring the Summit\n\n\n\nThe AOS fosters communication and collaboration between academia\, agencies\, Indigenous Peoples\, non-governmental organizations\, the private sector\, and others involved or interested in long-term observing activities. A key goal for Arctic observing is to achieve equity and representation for Indigenous Peoples in arctic research. The great value of the AOS is as a forum that brings these diverse interests together and allows for exchange of ideas. The AOS sessions include plenary presentations\, breakout sessions\, and poster presentations. \n\n\n\nAfter the Summit\n\n\n\nFollowing the summit\, AOS organizers distill discussions notes\, white papers\, short statements\, and participant feedback into a statement for the Arctic Science Ministerial. Outcomes from the summit also help the efforts of the Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks to coordinate Arctic observing. Building on the white papers submitted to the summit\, there was an opportunity to submit full papers for publication – after peer review – in a special issue of the journal Arctic in late 2020. \n\n\n\nThanks to our sponsors\n\n\n\n\nAkureyri Municipality\n\n\n\nArctic Institute of North America\n\n\n\nIcelandic Centre for Research\n\n\n\nIceland Ministry for Education\, Science and Culture\n\n\n\nIceland Ministry for Environment and Natural Resources\n\n\n\nIceland Ministry for Foreign Affairs\n\n\n\nInternational Arctic Research Center\n\n\n\nNational Science Foundation\n\n\n\nNorlandair\n\n\n\nPew Charitable Trusts\n\n\n\nUnited States Embassy in Iceland\n\n\n\nUniversity of Akureyri\n\n\n\nUniversity of Calgary

SUMMARY:Japan-U.S. Arctic Strategy and Policy Workshop 2015
DESCRIPTION:Based on the increasingly urgent need for scientific understanding and rational policies to guide Arctic decision making\, investment\, and development\, the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) and the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) convened a Japan-U.S. Arctic Strategy and Policy Workshop during the first week of March\, 2015. This workshop explored topics of immediate urgency\, long-term importance\, and US-Japan cooperation. We are confident these workshop discussions will provide input both to Japan’s Arctic policy and to the execution of the US Executive Order on the Arctic. \nThis workshop was based in the recognition that Arctic science is receiving more attention with each passing month. The Arctic’s critical roles in global climate dynamics\, policy\, commerce\, and security have made it a prominent feature in major strategic plans and assessments\, including the U.S. National Strategy for the Arctic Region (2013) and Arctic Research Plan: FY 2013-2017. The U.S. has also named Admiral Robert Papp as special representative to the Arctic\, as a way to strengthen international partnerships\, and foreshadowing the beginning of the U.S. chairmanship of the Arctic Council in April 2015. \nBrowse and download workshop files

SUMMARY:Arctic Climate Impact Assessments 2000-2005
DESCRIPTION:Assessments of the Consequences of Climate Variability and Change and the Effects of Increased UV in the Arctic Region\nClimate variability and change\, and more recently\, notable increases in UV radiation\, have become important issues in the Arctic region over the past few decades. These issues have also prevailed in the international scientific and political scene for over a decade through major programs of scientific research (e.g.\, WCRP)\, through intergovernmental assessments (e.g.\, AMAP\, IPCC\, and WMO)\, and through international treaties\, protocols and conventions. \nThe results of scientific research and indigenous knowledge have increasingly documented climatic changes that are more pronounced in the Arctic region than in other regions of the world or are critical to our understanding of global-scale climatic processes. Observations from indigenous cultures of the Arctic indicate that the physical environment\, as well as the flora and fauna\, has been changing. \nIt is most essential that a penetrating analysis of these observations and studies be carried out in order to ascertain more specifically to what extent these represent natural variability over years and decades\, and\, on the other hand\, how many are indicators of long-term changes due to human activi- ties. Only then will we be able to tell what future changes can be foreseen and which impacts on life in the North may be expected. \nSee ACIA Assessment Reports\, Workshop Reports\, and other documents

SUMMARY:Bering Sea Impact Study 1995-1999
DESCRIPTION:Our assessment of the impacts of climate change in Alaska and the Bering Sea region started in 1995 and has now spanned a period of almost five years\, with workshops taking place each year. \nIn 1995 our first workshop was on “Preparing for an Uncertain Future: Impacts of Short- and Long-Term Climate Change on Alaska.” \nIn 1996\, the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) provided funds for an impact assessment on the Bering Sea under an IASC project called BESIS (Bering Sea Impact Assessment). A proposal to the Office of Polar Programs\, National Science Foundation was also funded and allowed us to conduct our second workshop in September 1996. \nThe 1997 workshop received funding from the Department of Interior and was recognized by the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) as the national workshop for the Alaska region. \nA fourth impacts assessment workshop under the USGCRP took place in Fairbanks\, Alaska\, in October 1998 with Department of Interior funding. \nWith NOAA and IASC funds we also organized an international workshop in Tromsø\, Norway\, in April 1999\, to begin a pan-Arctic assessment of the impacts of climate change. \nSee all workshop reports
