SUMMARY:TEK in the Cryosphere: Community Responses to Diminishing Snow\, Ice and Permafrost (by invitation only)
DESCRIPTION:SEARCH and the International Arctic Research Center welcome you to share your stories about cryosphere change\n\n\n\nPhoto by Bogomil Shopov – Бого on Unsplash\n\n\n\nWe are learning more and more about the consequences of Earth’s changing cryosphere (frozen waters and ground). But what are the real consequences for people and ecosystems? \n\n\n\nWe propose a brainstorming session to explore and share the diverse experiences and understanding of the implications of a changing cryosphere—permafrost\, glaciers\, high mountain environments\, polar sea ice\, and other cold environments—and its impacts on culture\, tradition\, sustainability and community way of life. \n\n\n\nOur vision for the brainstorming session\n\n\n\nIn Fall 2026 we’d like to bring together 12–20 people\, including Indigenous participants as well as other community and topic leaders\, who have Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) concerning the cryosphere. Goals and outcomes include: \n\n\n\n\nInitial conversations on how we might propel greater collective dialogue\n\n\n\nGreater understanding of hyper-local ecosystems in the cryosphere that are being impacted by climate change\n\n\n\nTo foster greater respect for the importance of ice in its many forms\n\n\n\nTo take action to protect the cryosphere and build community resilience to its changing condition\n\n\n\n\nThis gathering might lead to a subsequent open roundtable discussion with larger participation or planned advocacy / learning actions on issues identified. \n\n\n\nPotential topics for discussion\n\n\n\n\nRecent efforts to advance legal protection/advocacy protecting glaciers and periglacial regions/permafrost (in Argentina/Chile/Peru/Kyrgyzstan\, etc.)\n\n\n\nSocial media concerning disappearing glaciers (Argentina/Mexico/Bolivia/Nepal/Alaska/Europe)\n\n\n\nOpportunities and challenges to unite around ice and the cryosphere / calls to action\n\n\n\nFocus on specific regions: (Himalayas\, Andes\, Rockies\, Greenland\, Polar\, Asia\, etc.)\n\n\n\nIndigenous voices and perspectives on the cryosphere/ice geographies and deep knowledge of ice\n\n\n\nConcerns over melting permafrost and/or changes in glacier melt flow impacts to communities\n\n\n\nImpacts of changing glacial run off change to fish and other organisms\n\n\n\nPermafrost thaw and glacier instability impacts (mountain terrain stability\, outburst floods\, etc.)\n\n\n\nMethane emissions from permafrost and how they might galvanize advocacy action\n\n\n\nSea-level rise and changing climates in the cryosphere in multiple regions\n\n\n\nNature-based solutions and TEK in the cryosphere to build community resilience\n\n\n\nTwo-eyed science approaches to cryosphere science (Indigenous and scientific lenses)\n\n\n\nSea ice ecosystems on which many depend for travel and harvesting resources.\n\n\n\nChanging forest dynamics (such as Boreal Forests / Wildfires\, etc.)\n\n\n\nThe existence of and role of periglacial features–permafrost (invisible glaciers)\n\n\n\nMaking glaciers/storing ice (ways of addressing the loss of glaciers)\n\n\n\n\nParticipants would include\n\n\n\n\nRepresentatives of Indigenous communities representing high mountain environments\, the polar regions\, or other cold environments\n\n\n\nCommunity leaders that are taking action to protect cold environments: glaciers\, permafrost\, sea ice.Communities engaging to thwart anthropogenic industrial operations in glacier/permafrost areas.Scientists working on snow\, ice\, and permafrost environments\n\n\n\n\nLeading questions to address\n\n\n\nParticipants would be asked to address these questions in short interventions (3-5 minutes) \n\n\n\n\nHow the cryosphere changing in diverse communities and key impacts to cultures and livelihoods?\n\n\n\nHow are communities addressing these cryospheric changes?\n\n\n\nHow can collective action help build community resilience to a changing cryosphere?\n\n\n\n\nPlanning committee and contacts\n\n\n\n\nBrendan Kelly\, Chief Scientist\, International Arctic Research Center\, University of Alaska Fairbanks\n\n\n\nJorge Daniel Taillant\, Executive Director\, Commission for Environmental Cooperation\n\n\n\nKakwiranóron Cook\, Indigenous Affairs Officer\, Commission for Environmental Cooperation\n\n\n\nMicaela Martinez\, Director of Environmental Justice & Research\, South Bronx Unite
